A 25-year-old St. Paul woman was killed early Sunday in an apparent home invasion.

The woman was found dead around 6:30 a.m. after officers responded to a house along the 1700 block of West Minnehaha Avenue.

St. Paul police identified the victim as Heidi Firkus. Her 27-year-old husband, Nicholas Firkus, was taken to Regions Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. He has since been released.

Police said they received two 911 calls from the house. The first, a report of a burglary, was lost, while the second reported shots had been fired.

A Broad Street man aimed up on a burglary suspect still inside his home Thursday morning.

Armed with a revolver, according to a Shelby Police report, 63-year-old Roger Dale Ramsey told the thief to “freeze” before the suspect fled outdoors.

The report states Ramsey returned home around midnight Thursday and heard noises for several minutes before investigating.

“Roger advised he checked his rear bathroom window then the window on the west side of the house, then turned around in his dining room to see a suspect step out of his bedroom into the dining room,” read the report by Officer J.V. Patrick.

RUSH: Mike in South Florida, great to have you on the EIB Network, sir.  Hello.

CALLER:  Hi, Rush.  It’s a pleasure to be here with you.  I have two concerns that are quite bothersome to me.  The first is on the oil leak, the big oil spill.

RUSH:  Yeah?

CALLER:  And I haven’t heard anything about this but we know what happened in the ClimateGate situation, and we know about the faulty research and the faulty data, et cetera, and I’m sure that something like this has been done but it’s a thought. Is it possible that somebody on the other side might have thought in their minds for the greater good to maybe not have done some maintenance on the oil lines, to maybe have what they thought might have been a controlled oil leak that got outta hand to try and shut off or shun the thought of having any more offshore oil drilling?

RUSH:  Well…

CALLER:  And all of a sudden we have this huge leak. The whole thing now shifts to we shouldn’t be drilling offshore because of this leak.

RUSH:  Charlie Crist already led the way there on suggesting we shouldn’t be doing any more drilling.  By the way, Charlie Crist sometime today, is going to announce that he’s going to go for the Senate seat in Florida as an independent.

CALLER:  Yes.

The following videos show SWAT team and riot police deployments to Tea Party demonstrations in Quincy, Illinois. The Tea Parties were protesting outside of a building where President Obama was delivering a speech.

According to The Dana Show, local police were reluctant to deploy a massive police force but were overruled by Secret Service:

Who gave the order to call in the riot police on protesters? Word is that Secret Service from inside the venue and the presidential team pressured local law enforcement, who were against the idea. Local cops were overruled, I’m told by various sources, including a few members of local press. Moore reported that she overheard Secret Service telling the riot squad to “push them back, out of sight.”

No word on whether the President will request riot police and SWAT teams at Illegal Immigration protests scheduled to be held around the country May 1. If the actions displayed by protesters  in Arizona recently are any guide, we’d certainly recommend a strong police presence.

U.S. meat prices may rise to records this summer after farmers reduced hog and cattle herds to the smallest sizes in decades, the result of surging feed costs linked to demands for more ethanol.

Wholesale pork jumped as much as 25 percent this month to 90.68 cents a pound last week, the highest since August 2008, U.S. Department of Agriculture data show. Beef climbed 22 percent this year to $1.6896 a pound on April 23, the most expensive since July 2008. Chicken’s gain in March was the most in 20 months.

Demand for pork chops, steaks and chicken breasts is rising as the economy improves, backyard barbecues resume and China and Russia allow more U.S. imports. Domestic supplies may drop to a 13-year low because of culls to stem losses caused by corn prices that doubled after former President George W. Bush set targets to increase ethanol use.

Today Iowa Governor Chet Culver (D) signed Senate File 2379 into law, signifying the first time in nearly a century that a major step has been taken to enhance the right-to-carry freedoms of Iowans. This NRA-backed legislation will allow law-abiding Iowans the right to carry without being subject to the subjective discretion of individual sheriffs, changing Iowa from a “May-Issue” state to a “Shall-Issue” state.

The House of Representatives passed SF 2379 by a vote of 81 to 15; Senate File 2379 previously passed in the Senate by a vote of 44 to 4. Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal (D) sponsored SF 2379, while House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (D) sponsored the house version, HF 2528.

Chris W. Cox, executive director of NRA-ILA said, “This is a major victory for law-abiding gun owners in Iowa. Concealed carry permits should not be granted on a subjective basis using an indiscernible set of criteria.” This measure will require sheriffs to issue a permit to carry firearms to all applicants unless they are subject to certain specific disqualifiers.

Nouriel Roubini, it can be safely said, gives good panel — especially when the subject is the eurozone and the possible disintegration thereof. He’s been bearish on the PIGS in general and on Italy in particular for many years now, but I don’t think it comes as much surprise to him or to anybody else that Greece is the first country really in the firing line.

One of the most interesting things about the status quo post-downgrade is that no one seems to have a clue what the base-case scenario is. Are the markets still expecting Greece to get bailed out, but adding on an ever-increasing yield premium to account for the possibility that it won’t be? Are they, like panelist James McCaughan, expecting an orderly debt restructuring later this year, with an effective haircut in the 20-40% range? They certainly don’t seem to be expecting anything worse than that — Greece’s bonds are trading at high yields, yes, but not at distressed levels, and there’s still room to lose a lot of money on those 2-year bonds if they end up defaulting.

Rating agency Moody’s has downgraded nine Greek banks because of the country’s faltering economy, Moody’s Investors Service said in a statement Friday.

The move reflects “their weakening stand-alone financial strength and the anticipated additional pressures stemming from the country’s challenged economic prospects,” the agency said.

The banks affected by the downgrade are: National Bank of Greece, EFG Eurobank Ergasias, Alpha Bank, Piraeus Bank, Emporiki Bank of Greece, Agricultural Bank of Greece, General Bank of Greece, Marfin Egnatia Bank and Attica Bank.

Hoping again to be a pioneer in promoting healthier eating, Santa Clara County supervisors on Tuesday approved the nation’s first ordinance that would prevent restaurants from using toys to lure kids to meals high in fat, sugar and calories.

The law prohibits restaurants in unincorporated parts of the county from giving away goodies unless the meals meet certain nutritional guidelines. More and more in recent years, fast-food critics say restaurants have encouraged families to make unhealthy choices by offering Iron Man Cyclone Spinning Robot Drones and Barbie Mermaid dolls with their kids’ meals.

Though the crackdown will affect no more than a handful of restaurants, county supervisors hope their vote will create a ripple effect in cities, other counties and the state — similar to how Santa Clara County helped to lead the way on forcing fast-food chains to post calorie counts on menus. They also hoped this latest push would prod the restaurant industry to take notice.
